Oakland Residential Recycling: Single Family (1-4 units)

Residents in 1-4 unit buildings receive once-weekly pickup of recyclables and landfill waste using a three-cart system:  The green cart is for yard trimmings and food scraps recycling.  The gray cart is for bottles, cans, jars, paper and cardboard.  Note, there is no need to sort these recyclable materials – they all go in the same cart.  To see what items are accepted in your grey cart, click here.  The burgundy cart is for garbage and non-recyclables.

Oakland Residential Recycling: Multi-family (5 or more units)

Residents in buildings or complexes with 5 or more units may now mix all recyclable items (bottles, cans, jars and paper) in your existing recycling carts or bins.  There's no need to separate these recyclables anymore!  To see what items are accepted in your recycling, click here.

If your apartment building does not have recycling service, or does not have enough recycling service, contact the City of Oakland Recycling Hotline at recycling@oaklandnet.com, or (510) 238-SAVE (7283) to request containers and/or assistance setting up or improving your program.  (Tenants, managers or property owners may all call, but final authorization of new recycling service requests requires the approval of the property owner.)

Thank you, Oakland residents!

Residential recycling results show sustained increases:

Residential solid waste: DOWN 14%

Residential paper, bottles & cans: UP 41%

Residential yard trimmings & food scraps:  UP 37%

graph

Thanks to Oakland residents like you, almost 400,000 tons of cans, bottles, paper, cardboard, yard trimmings, food scraps, and used motor oil have been recycled since the Oakland Recycles Curbside Recycling Program began in 1993.  The materials have been used by manufacturers to make new products, such as aluminum cans, glass bottles, newspaper, packaging products, re-refined motor oil, and soil-boosting compost.  Your recycling efforts have also saved valuable natural resources such as trees, fuel, and water; and by recycling you have significantly reduced air and water pollution.

The above figures show percentage changes in the average monthly tonnage collected during the five years prior to the 2005 rollout of new services and the three years since.
