Winter Storm Report - February 22 - 27, 2007

Honorable Mayor, Madam City Administrator, and City Council Members:

In the six-day period ending Tuesday, February 27th at 4:30 p.m., 1.45 inches of rain fell in Oakland, bringing our percent of normal precipitation to 67% for the period July 1, 2006, through February 27, 2007.

A chance of sporadic showers continues for the remainder of the week as the current frontal system moves through the area.

The Public Works Call Center staff received calls as usual, dispatching crews as needed for mudslide cleanup, area flooding and tree related incidences. Call volume was light with a total of 40 total weather-related calls received over the six-day period.

Despite the occasional downpours, crews continue to inspect and clean inlets and storm drains. The Lake Merritt area and area hills remain problem free as crews frequently monitored known problem areas. There were crews on standby for sandbag distribution, with 120 sandbags and 20 ft. of plastic sheeting distributed from the Municipal Service Center and Shepherd Canyon yard over the six days.

Our crews remain on alert ready to address developments as they occur.

Channel 2 KTVU, Jesse Gary, interviewed PWA Operations Manager, Guadalupe Thomas, regarding the City’s pre-storming activities. During the interview the drainage response crew was at work in the background at 57th and Shattuck.

Our crews will continue to work through this week servicing calls and proactively inspecting and cleaning inlets and other drainage structures. I will continue to keep you posted on any developments as they occur.
